Meaning of “WakeWakame(わけわかめ)”

“WakeWakame(わけわかめ)” means It doesn’t make any sense or I don’t get it. This is slang that has been used for a long time.
This slang is from “WakeGaWakaranai(わけがわからない)”. “Wake(わけ)” means reason or motive, “Wakaranai(わからない)” means I don’t know. So this slang where the word “wakaranai(わからない)” is replaced with “wakame(わかめ)” (which means seaweed). Why “wakame(わかめ)”? I don’t think there’s a special reason, but it’s probably just because the beginning “waka” is the same in both words.
